I find it funny that most all bloggers support Dean for president. The reason is obvious. But to elect someone as president because he's a blogger is right up there w/ electing actors. Do Americans actually care about policy? Or do they vote solely for the coolest person?

iM 19th on my first name "randy" and 3rd and 4th on my last name "morin". But I do have #1, 2, 3 on the term "real geek".

Quote: A major research institution has recently announced the discovery of the heaviest element yet known to science. This new element has been tentatively named "Administratium." Administratium has 1 neutron, 12 assistant neutrons, 75 deputy neutrons, and 111 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.

These 312 particles are held together by a force called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons. Since Administratium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected as it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A minute amount of Administratium causes one reaction to take over 4 days to complete when it would normally take less than a second.

Administratium has a normal half-life of 3 years; it does not decay but instead undergoes a reorganization in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places. In fact, Administratium's mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganization causes some morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes. This characteristic of moron-promotion leads some scientists to speculate that Administratium is formed whenever morons reach a certain quantity in concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as "Critical Morass." You will know it when you see it.

Quote: There is an online getaway where you can hang out with your friends and meet new ones--all in a lush 3D environment that's yours to explore!

Randy: I have seen the future and it is there.

I often ask developers if they are handling exceptions and very often the answer is yes. The problem is that I didn't really ask a good question. I should ask if they are handling exceptions properly. For instance, a common fault is to return false from a function when an exception occurs.

   try {
      do();
   }
   catch( xxx ) {
      return false;
   }
   return true;

This is a perfect example of handling an exception but doing nothing with it. A better approach is to catch the exception, do something with it and rethrow it. Thus allowing the caller to perform his own actions on the exception.

   try {
      do();
   }
   catch( xxx ) {
      cleanup();
      throw;
   }

This is not to say that catching an exception and not rethrowing it is improper. This depends primarily on your design. For instance, if you are being called by a framework that will terminate if you allow exceptions back thru from your callback, then rethrowing is clearly not an option. Last, you more than likely have to eventually not rethrow the exception. The trick is to find those spots and rethrow most everywhere else.

After some complaints awhile back that my HTML didn't validate, I spent the extra 5 minutes to check my new site, this time around. It validates! As does my CSS.

Valid HTML 4.01! Valid CSS!

I once consulted for a very large, successful, profitable and growing company that shall remain nameless. While working there, I'd often pass by this one team leads office and more often than not, he would be involved one of four activities, in order of most frequently occurring.

  • Spinning around on his swivel chair.
  • Tossing a water bottle.
  • Bouncing a ball.
  • Social chatter.

Rarely did I ever see this invidividual working. In fact, I once stood slightly out of his view and timed him twirling around on his swivel chair for 12 consecutive minutes, while on another occasion I timed him tossing a water bottle for 8 consecutive minutes. But then, I had nothing better todo and most likely neither did he ;)

It's amazing after working for so many high stress dot-BOMB startups, that the one place I worked where nobody did any actual work, was also, the most profitable.

Cute Programming is when you use a creative technique out of the ordinary to accomplish a task. These techniques often work well on a team of one programmer, but not in collaborative team projects.

The best example I have of cute programming, was a programmer who decided unilaterally to prefix his class names with Cxx_, where xx is the component name. This forced the IDE to group his classes by component. Of course, the IDE allowed for adhoc grouping, so the technique, although creative, served only to confuse his co-workers.

  • Software Hacking is when you know enough about programming to be dangerous, but not enough to contribute real value. If your component or system is constantly falling over, then you are likely a hacker.
  • Software Programming is when you can add real value by writing components or subsystems, but don't understand the big picture. If you just write code w/ no plan, then you are likely a programmer.

It's quite amazing how almost every programmer on this planet believes that they are the ultimate programmer. That they know more about programming than all the programmers who past before them. That no matter how young, their inexperience is compensated by their supreme intellect.

The truth is that you don't really know how to program until you understand that you are not a programming god, that you know nothing. Only then can you move forward. But, it's not enough to admit this to others. You must admit this to yourself. This is very humiliating. But it's like how admitting that you are an alcoholic is the first step to recovery.

Today, she ran out of space and she had to make a decision to remove one link.

Yes, I could create folders on the links bar, but that wouldn't be easy for her to understand. I could also shrink the text on the buttons, but I already do that and don't want to get her into short-forms just yet.

What I really need is a links bar that can expand into a second row.

So many others had submitted plans and models of flying machines that when the brothers sent in theirs, patent officials had a ready response. As it turned out, the feat was performed eight weeks after the editorial was written. (Applause.) Issues raised over IM w/ a fellow Atomite.

  1. RSS Issues. The RSS issues are those raised here. PaSS does not currently address these issues, but may in future revisions. The resolutions in PaSS may be as follows; single-escaped HTML in title and description (CDATA?) and link means reference, not permaLink, use guid for permaLink; want XHTML, then use xhtml:body.
  2. Setting aside of the Atom effort. PaSS will be embedded in Atom and requires the Atom effort continue moving forward.
  3. An Assumption that RSS can be revved. RSS as a feed format is different then PaSS as a vocabulary. RSS will not be revved, PaSS will.
  4. Process. The process will be a small group 3-5 that will vote yeah and nay on proposals by the community. iM seeking volunteers to lead this group.
  5. The purpose to the community, once the spec is released. A WSDL and RSS capable Atom API.
  6. Yet another format. PaSS is not a feed format, as outlined in the spec.

Every once in awhile I go on a rampage of bad code that I've seen over the years. Today, is one of those days, so let's enumerate a bit of it. Hopefully, somebody can learn, not to do this.

  • A programmer didn't know that the base Java Object has synchronization methods. He proceeded to write a synchronization class based on polling a bool. The consumer was a while loop (w/ no wait or sleep) that polled the boolean for true. The server ran at 100% CPU utilization, for obvious reasons.
  • A programmer wrote a server that created one thread for each user alert condition. A user could have zero, one or  more alerts defined. In the early beta, a few dozen users had set a few hundred alerts and the system collapsed.
  • A class had a protected member that the programmer required. He defined a class within a method (yes, it's allowed) that inherited from the class and defined a public method that gave him access to the protected member. He then casted a pointer to the original class to the class defined inside the method and BINGO! he defeated the protected keyword.
  • A step better. The same scenario, where a programmer required access to a protected member. He edited the library include file to make the member public. Of course, it only compiled on his machine.
  • A programmer wrote many C++ preprocessor macros that redefined well written function names like SetWindowsText to cryptic names like SWT. He claimed he could type them faster.

Here's a tip on how to identify Spaghetti Code. Try to use one class within a library. If including this one class requires that you include a second class and that second class requires that you include a third class and so on, then you have Spaghetti Code (not always, but almost). We had this problem at 724 Solutions. If a 724 developer included any one class within the core framework, then you were required to include all other classes within the framework.

Note: 724 is approaching their all-time low. On Wednesday, they traded as low as $3.50 CDN, 8 cents above the low. They haven't released news in a month and a half. They once traded on TSE at $3,450.00 (post split price).

Nik Antropov didnFitzy and The Eagle played big for the Leafs winning 1-0 tonight. They haven't played very well in the last two games, but still captured 3 of 4 points. It's typical to pick up a lot of points on the back-end of a winning streak while not playing well. Eventually, the play will catch up to them and they'll lose a few games. By the way, the Leafs are 9-0-0-1 in their last ten games. That's 19 of a possible 20 points.

The question was asked, "Did I shave?" after the Toronto loss to the Blues. I didn't! They did still get a point for losing in overtime. I will shave when they lose in regular time.

With 3 minutes left in the game last Tuesday night, losing 2-1, Fitzy took a 4 minute high sticking penalty, which meant the Leafs would be short-handed the rest of the game and losing by a goal. Surely Toronto would get zero points this game.

The next 3 minutes played like the Leafs were on the power-play as the dominated the play 4 on 5. With 17 seconds on the clock Nieuwendyk potted the tying goal.

Still on the power-play in overtime for another 59 seconds, the Blues scored to win the game. But the Leafs earned a big point with 3 minutes of top play.

Quote: RSS clearly is about to go through another growth spurt. Quote: 'Friend of a Friend' networks changing online relationships. [cut] The buzz is out on social network software online, what is commonly called "Friend of a Friend" networks, or FOAF for short. Recently there was a bidding war over a software patent, an application that supposedly can manage relationships in your life like the "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" game. What was most interesting in the auction were the bidders who didn't win: The first was the hot online dating pool-cum-social experiment Friendster, and the second was the online giant Yahoo! The two guys who took the prize own 2.5 percent of Friendster but are also the founders of a rival venture, Tribe.net, and LinkedIn.

The question has been asked many times in all the feedback iM getting from PaSS. The answer is here. iM giving Sam my ear and waiting for his "big picture." Next weekend, I'll merge Sam's "big picture" into a roadmap for PaSS.

In consideration

One thing that should be obvious, is the "Motivation for PaSS." The motivation is the re-integration of the two syndication camps; Atomites and RSSers. For this to work, the Atomites have to compromise. For this to work, the RSSers have to compromise. Maybe we can meet in the middle.

Quote: PaSS is a Web content syndication format based on its sister standard RSS. RSS 2.0 does not have the ability to include its elements in other XML formats through a namespace. PaSS allows RSS 2.0 elements to exist as vocabularies in other XML documents.

In the next day, iM going to release PaSS v1.1. PaSS is a formal namespace for RSS. v1.0 was named PSS, which left too much room for fun. v1.1 will include.

  • ordering of elements,
  • concrete XSD,
  • copyright switch for RSS to Havard,
  • the new name.

I'll then release PaSSAPI v1.0. An RSS/SOAP protocol, that uses the PaSS vocabulary.

Update: Here tis.

Quote: Suppose everyone maintained an FOAF file online somewhere. Now, suppose that these FOAF files could be updated by the user’s mail client, or more correctly by the user’s address book. Every time you add a person to your address book, a related foaf:knows is added to your FOAF file.

Quote: The recent debate on both the atom-syntax and the www-tag mailing lists focuses on the feed:// URI proposal and it's lack of adherence to guidelines set in the current draft of Architecture of the World Wide Web document being produced by the W3C Technical Architecure Group. This document is an attempt to document the architecture of the World Wide Web ex post facto.

Randy: There are already countless mechanisms to subscribe to syndication feeds.

  • Extend IE/Mozilla w/ a Subscribe button that uses Auto-Discovered feeds (i.e. RSSExplorer).
  • Running a localhost mini Web server to capture such clicks (i.e. Radio).

Why would we break the Web architecture to do something that has already been solved within the Web architecture?

Quote: So what is the alternative to hooking onto a new URI scheme? Well, the correct way to this is to hook onto the mime-type. Mime-types are the fundamental way types of files are identified in HTTP, and SMTP and in other areas too but well just concentrate on HTTP for now. Currently Atom feeds have the mime-type of 'application/x.atom+xml', the 'x.' part exists because Atom is currently experimental. Once the specification settles down and feeds start appearing in the wild that should change to 'application/atom+xml'.

Quote: Talsorian's contact hung up after telling him to wait a little longer for the delivery. The set of disks he waited for was obviously important, but why not just shoot the guy and take them. That was the easiest way to accomplish such jobs. But for ten thousand loons he would wait here all night.

Talsorian, an earthling dropped a couple loons into the automatic waiter unit and requested another glass of wine. The plastic cup dropped down and filled up with red house wine. Two drinks down and another coming, Talsorian though to himself. Let's just hope this disk exchange takes place before I'm dead drunk.

A radar image of Venus was selected to show surface features; Venus is actually covered by dense clouds. A comet is heading toward the inner solar system; its glowing tail is the result of heating by our star, the Sun. JPL spacecraft have visited and imaged all the planets except Pluto.

If they survive, these robotic geologists will explore two diverse areas of the planet.

Update: My third call finally clicked. We could hear each other on both ends.

Investigate everything and you'll find yourself better capable of differentiating between those that do and those that lie. Not that anybody is perfect, everybody makes mistakes (especially me) and more lies are the result of ignorance than intent to mislead (I've told my share of lies, but mostly from my own ignorance of the truth).  But a regular liar is not ignorant, he's deceptive. He's not trustworthy and not worth the effort.

I once worked for a person that would lie to my face, I'd expose him a second later and he'd be right onto a second lie. I also worked for a person that would lie (from ignorance) to my face, I'd expose him a second later and he'd be right onto the next ignorant lie. Neither person is worth dealing w/, one because he's unethical and one because he's un-intelligent.

I investigate almost everything. If I liked working w/ you, then you can be sure that you are neither unethical nor ignorant. If you were either, then I'd be gone with you.

Quote: While pretty much any modern client has access to a socket library and can pretty much construct any request in such a manner, a number of programming languages have higher level interfaces which take care of a number of administrative functions such as redirect, proxy support, and the like. Examples of such libraries: Python's urllib2 and JavaScript/VBScript/JScript's XMLHttpRequest. Unfortunately, many of these higher level libraries are limited what they support. Even the relatively recently issued XForms 1.0 Proposed Recommendation does not provide support for the DELETE method.

Randy: In other words? REST is flawed, doesn't work w/ most client software and we should've done SOAP in the first place. Now, we are going to kludge some SOAP in there to take care of the REST-loose ends.

If my computer powers off while I have Outlook running, the next time I start Outlook it takes 5-10 minutes. This happened twice today when two of my kids accidently pulled the power cable. Quote: As to the Atom API, I won't bitch about it any more if RSS 2.0 is adopted as the core Atom feed format because the feed format is far more important than the API.

Draft 08 of the AtomAPI is now available.

This revision has been a long time in coming as it reflects the large changes that were previewed almost a month ago. Changes include:

  • Refactored the specification.
  • Merging the Introspection file into the feed format.
  • Dropped the distinction between the type of URI used to create new entries and the kind used to create comments.
  • Dropped user preferences.

Scoble: Hey, since we're gonna have to do two formats (RSS 2.0 et Atom), why shouldn't Microsoft invent a third?

Randy: You mean a fourth? There are already two common formats; RSS 1.0 and RSS 0.91/2.0 and many flavors of each. Atom is yet a third. And M$FT already has an RSS equivalent . It's called CDF :)

More classic comments.

John Robb: Microsoft should just create its own, make it the default standard through wide distribution, and stop all of this nonsense.

Don Park: So called Atom specs are just proposals by certain active participants who are 'first-movers' with 'loudest-voices'. Even worse, they are just RSS format with different element names. API-wise, it's poisoned with REST ideals.

Randy: Question is... is it worth the price?

It covers an online software platform that allows users to build relationship networks. Andrew Katz, a lawyer with Fox Rothschild who specializes in Internet intellectual property deals, said, "This is probably the pioneer patent out there."
