Some people don't like Google. Personally, I think they don't like Google for the same reason we sometimes don't like Microsoft, that is, success. The desire to knock people off the pedestal we've put them on must be one of the fundamental instincts of humanity. The latest strike against Google is really stupid. Anybody who actually thinks Google is evil because their Google.cn Website is censoring content, is not considering the entire truth. The entire truth, would include the alternative. You see, Google.cn didn't exist last week. It's a new server. In order for Google to host a Chinese Google, they have to abide by Chinese rules. This includes censoring some content that I'm sure Google would prefer was available to Chinese citizens. If they didn't censor that content, then their wouldn't be a Google.cn available to the Chinese. Think about that. The alternatives are Google.cn censored or no Google.cn at all. Which would you prefer? If you say none at all, then please explain why nothing is better than censored content, cause that doesn't make any sense to me. Note also that Google.com hasn't changed. You can still get the uncensored content on Google.com. And Google.cn provides links all over the place to the uncensored Google.com. The naysayers are not mentioning these facts, because it pretty much invalidates their entire argument. MHO.

http://www.bloggernews.net/2006/01/google-capitulates-to-china.html

Randy: I didn't really want to blog this, but everybody seems to think its important. It's not. Google is not censoring results where those results were previously available. Google is not censoring results where those results are not going to continue to be available elsewhere. It's just a new version of Google that respects the wishes of the Chinese government. Google is not evil. The Chinese government maybe. Enough said. Enough time wasted.

AP: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to hear an appeal from the maker of the BlackBerry in the long-running battle over patents for the wildly popular, handheld wireless e-mail device.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10989832/

Randy: I find it hilarious that the U.S. courts continue to rule against RIM and push them into settlement, even though the preliminary patent reviews indicate that NTP patents are invalid. In other words, the U.S. legal system allows you to file invalid patents and force settlements, as long as the patent office doesn't discover they are invalid before your court date. Man, I really gotta join in this money game. The U.S. patent system is degrading into a joke.

Let me go thru the reasoning with everybody on why and who I'm voting for in the Canadian elections.

  • Liberals - Corruption. If I vote for them, then I'm saying it's OK to be a corrupt politician.
  • Conservatives - Modern Day Bigots. They believe in taking away the rights of women to have abortions and gays to marry. I simply can't vote for somebody who want to impose their beliefs on others.
  • NDP - Just got a phone call from them. Automatic dialer and message. The personal touch. I like Jack Layton more than any other NDP leader, but I don't buy things from telemarketers, nor do I vote for them.

I really hope there's a 4th party worth voting for. I heard the Green party is good. Right now, it's likely 50-50 that I even bother voting for these idiots.

For those that are following, 6+ months ago I blogged about how American kids were pissed that their schools were blocking MySpace.com. The post has turned into my all-time most popular with as many as a dozen comments being left everyday. Well, Brazillian schools wanted in on some of the action, so they started blocking the Brazillian equivalent to MySpace.com, yes Orkut. "Okut bloqueado" returns nearly 10k results. It would seem though that workplaces are blocking Orkut, in addition to just schools. It's not just the teens anymore.

Jack LaytonToday, I listened to the Canadian elections debate. Let's start by saying that I've been on multiple occasions a card carrying member of the Conservative party. I was also Policy Director of the Young Conservatives at the University of Windsor. Basically, we have the choice between four candidates; a separatist, a corrupt party, a modern day bigot and Jack Layton. Guess who I'm voting for?

Right now, the modern day bigot is leading in the polls, followed by the corrupt party. What are Canadians thinking? Do you really want to elect a party (Conservatives) that wants to re-open the gay marriage debate? Are you voting for them because they are buying your vote by promising $500/child? Where do you think that money comes from? It's $500 more in taxes. Got it? Are you voting for them because they are promising to cut 2% off the GST? I guess if you can't come up with real policies, you can always buy votes. I just hope Canadians don't fall for this.

Ian Johnston: An extraordinary "hyperspace" engine that could make interstellar space travel a reality by flying into other dimensions is being investigated by the United States government. [cut] The theoretical engine works by creating an intense magnetic field that, according to ideas first developed by the late scientist Burkhard Heim in the 1950s, would produce a gravitational field and result in thrust for a spacecraft. Also, if a large enough magnetic field was created, the craft would slip into a different dimension, where the speed of light is faster, allowing incredible speeds to be reached. Switching off the magnetic field would result in the engine reappearing in our current dimension.

Believe it or not, I get hundreds of visitors from young adults looking for help by-passing their schools filtering of the MySpace domain. These hits come from a popular query on Google; MySpace Blocked. Anyhow, I thought I'd try to enumerate a few of the methods of by-passing a school's domain block filter, maybe it'll help a few kids survived the school day while failing all their exams. There are three primary ways of by-passing such a block, whether myspace.com or other.

  • Web browser proxy
  • HTTP proxy
  • Translation proxy

Web-browser proxy

A Web-browser proxy is a Webpage that allows you to type a URL and redirects all the responses from the blocked domain thru the proxy's domain. A list follows. I'll post a larger list in the comments.

Each has different features and some require you to pay to enable some features. Try them out and find which is best for you. BTW, use at your own risk. I don't warrant that these sites won't try to install some malware.

HTTP proxy

HTTP proxies tend to be more difficult to use for non-geeks and they are easily blocked by competent school IT techs. I won't explain them here, but if the Web-browser proxies don't work, then try these.

Translation proxy

The worst solution is to run the sites through a language translator. Not really a good solution because the translations tend to be awful. A list follows.

Anyhow, good luck and I pray you don't fail all your exams.

Robert Scoble: I do believe in a slippery slope. If they come after you today, maybe they’ll come after me tomorrow. Gotta stop this kind of stuff while we’re still talking about you.

Randy: This has nothing to do with a slippery slope. This has to do with censorship and what is right and wrong. Scoble, they will not come after you tomorrow, there's no slope. Microsoft is protecting its marketshare in the blog hosting business by censoring blogs on behalf of the Chinese government. Now, I don't blame any company for pushing the lines of ethics to better their business. That's life. Shit happens. But it's still wrong. Just like pulling support for the Gay Rights Bill was wrong. It's the same thing all over again. Microsoft has the power to be a world leader first and a business second. And I do believe their business would be better off on the side of good.

I'm still quite amazed how many experienced bloggers failed to understand linkage. When you write a blog entry and are referring to something you found elsewhere, then a nice link to that item would be so helpful to your readers. If I read your blog and find I have to go to Google to look up whatever you are talking about, then I'm very likely to hit the unsub button first. I know what these authors are thinking. They believe that by only linking to their own site and not others that they are keeping the users trapped at their site. And if you stick a large rectangular AdSense unit in the middle of the screen, then the combination is money right? I guess you make a lot of money short-term at the expense of a real prize down the road.

The ancient anointed ones were literally drenched in this potent mixture.

I don't use Yahoo Desktop Search everyday, only every few weeks. Whenever I go to use it, it's hung and won't start. Rebooting doesn't help. Killing processes doesn't help. But the best part, is that it causes the Windows search to break also. I've exchanged emails with the YDS development team at Yahoo! and this problem persists after what must be more than a year. Today is the final uninstall. You might ask why I use it, if it hangs all-the-time. Truth is, when it's not hanging, it's the best desktop search on the market.

Google Cube
I found this logo at logoogle
Sallie Hofmeister: Sources say Google has been in negotiations with Wal-Mart Stores Inc., among other retailers, to sell a Google PC. The machine would run an operating system created by Google, not Microsoft's Windows, which is one reason it would be so cheap — perhaps as little as a couple of hundred dollars. Bear Stearns analysts speculated in a research report last month that consumers would soon see something called "Google Cubes" — a small hardware box that could allow users to move songs, videos and other digital files between their computers and TV sets. Larry Page, Google's co-founder and president of products, will give a keynote address Friday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Analysts suspect that Page will use the opportunity either to show off a Google computing device or announce a partnership with a big retailer to sell such a machine.
